The Relevance of Mangled Extremity Severity Score to Predict Amputation: A Systematic Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
BACKGROUND: Amputation is one of the most common surgical procedures in world. One criteria for assessing amputation mangled extremity severity score (MESS). The MESS criterion has been used many years, but accuracy remains unknown. aim this study to know MESS. METHOD: Keywords “relevance,” “mangled score,” and “amputation,” its combination were entered into PubMed database. Four evaluators reviewed articles from past 5-year publication date with English language select relevant articles. RESULTS: outcomes systematic review are sensitivity specificity several scoring tools predict recommendations use. author identified 26 amputation, them recommend using variable 63–73% 70–76%. CONCLUSION: performs better prediction lower arterial injury. Other LogisticReg + Nearmiss, ISS, BN, GHOIS.

Mangled extremity severity score in children.
Treatment of the severely traumatized or mangled lower extremity poses significant challenges. The Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) is a scale that uses objective criteria to assist with acute management decisions. Most research on the MESS has been in adults or combined series with few children. The study was performed to investigate the MESS in children exclusively. The MESS was applie...
متن کاملAre We Justified Doing Salvage or Amputation Procedure Based on Mangled Extremity Severity Score in Mangled Upper Extremity Injury
INTRODUCTION Mangled upper limb injuries are at surge because of industrialization, modernization, and severe motor vehicle accidents. The utility of various scoring systems are meant for decision making in mangled lower limb injuries, and the same have been extrapolated for mangled upper limb injuries to make a decision of salvage or amputation for the lack of separate scoring system. MATERI...
متن کاملSalvage versus amputation: Utility of mangled extremity severity score in severely injured lower limbs
BACKGROUND The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the clinical utility of Mangled extremity severity score (MESS) in severely injured lower limbs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospectively 25 and prospectively 36 lower limbs in 58 patients with high-energy injuries were evaluated with the use of MESS, to assist in the decision-making process for the care of patients with such injuries. ...
متن کاملPrimary amputation vs limb salvage in mangled extremity: a systematic review of the current scoring system
BACKGROUND In the last decades a lot of new reconstructive techniques were developed for the treatment of mangled lower extremity. However failed attempt to limb salvage is related to high risk of mortality for the patient. Several scores were developed to establish guidelines for the decision to amputate or not, however in literature there is no consensus about the reliability of this scores. ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) as a predictor of lower limb amputation in children with trauma.
BACKGROUND Management of the severely injured lower limb in children remains a challenge despite advances in surgical techniques. Models that predict the risk of lower limb trauma patients are designed to provide an estimation of the probability of limb salvage. In this study, we validate Mangled Extremity Syndrome Index (Mangled Extremity Severity Score [MESS]) by measurement of its discrimina...
